It is the primary objective of GenerationEngage Silicon Valley to serve young people and address the issues that matter most to them. Social equity is one of these pressing issues. GenerationEngage is selecting 10 GenerationEngage ambassadors to serve on the Social Equity Committee.
The Social Equity Committee will develop 2009 GenerationEngage Social Equity programming geared towards young people. These programs will address access to higher education, immigration, community gardens, etc.
We will meet on the fourth Friday of every month from 6:00pm-8:00pm. If you are selected to serve on the Social Equity Committee, be prepared to commit at least 5 hours of your time each month.

The Environmental Committee will develop the 2009 GenerationEngage Green Communities Initiative geared towards young people. The goal of this initiative is to shift the behavior of young adults and their families in the Silicon Valley towards one that is more carbon neutral and to create media so that the global community can do follow suit. This program will provide you with the exciting opportunity to host an event with Al Gore.
We will meet on the third Friday of every month from 6:00pm-8:00pm. If you are selected to serve on the Environmental Committee, be prepared to commit at least 5 hours of your time each month.

The Economic Empowerment Committee will develop the 2009 GenerationEngage Economic Empowerment Program geared towards young people. This program will address student debt, basic finance, planning for the future, major financial decisions, etc. There is great potential for this to become a national program.
We will meet on the second Friday of every month from 6:00pm-8:00pm. If you are selected to serve on the Economic Empowerment Committee, be prepared to commit at least 5 hours of your time each month.

Alexis Herman was named Secretary of Labor by President Bill Clinton, the first African American to be nominated for that position and the fifth woman to be appointed.
Herman will be addressing the state of the economy and the financial empowerment and responsible citizenship of young adults.

A concert to increase awareness of one of the most significant issues affecting young adults: the reduction of government funding for higher education. Come for a night of local bands and to hear from elected officials and community leaders who are campaigning for state funding for higher education.

Clark Williams will be joining us and sharing his experience as a community organizer and providing insights regarding public service on boards and commissions. Clark Williams is currently the Vice Chair for Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits. In addition to Clark's many appointed or elected public service roles, he has been an active member of dozens of local non-profit organizations and associations. In 2006, Clark ran for an open seat on San Jose City Council and narrowly missed the runoff election by just 49 votes out of the 22,000 cast.

Engage Her is a documentary that inspires women minorities to lead and vote. It shares the personal histories of individuals, their reasons for avoiding the political process, as well as their struggles and triumphs. Hear the voices of those busy raising families, working multiple jobs, and constrained by time, culture, family, history, language, and fear of political engagement. Come join us on October 24th to watch the documentary, and discuss with us why nearly 70 percent of Asian Americans and Latinas, and 40 percent of African American women failed to vote in the 2004 election.

Chicago 10 is a movie that tells the story of how American government at Democratic Convention in Chicago 1968, put 8 American movement activists in prison in order to silence them from protesting against the Vietnam War. The movie revolves around their imprisonment, as well as their controversial court case. Come talk with us about the parallels of the 1968 convention and the 2008 Convention.
