Community Cinema: ASK NOT

June 03, 2009

Wednesday, June 3, 2009,  6:30 - 8:30 pm
Queens University of Charlotte, Sykes Auditorium
1900 Selwyn Avenue: Directions

View Trailer

Join us as we screen the unbroadcasted PBS documentary about the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the military.

ACLU co-President Paul Funderburk will discuss the ACLU's role locally and nationally in the campaign for LGBT equality and Charlotte City Council candidate Owen Sutkowski will discuss local GLBT issues.

About the film:
When President Bill Clinton took office in 1993, his campaign pledge to lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military became a heated issue, with military leaders, Christian fundamentalists and conservative Congress members expressing vehement opposition. A sociologist at Northwestern University proposed the "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) policy as a compromise, creating a double standard: Gay service members could serve as long as they were not open about their sexual orientation and did not engage in homosexual behavior.

Originally intended to protect gays, by letting them serve in the military without being subject to questions about their sexual orientation, DADT instead mandated silence and celibacy.

ASK NOT exposes the tangled political battles that led to DADT and examines the societal shifts that have occurred since its 1993 passage. Since the law’s implementation, more than 12,000 personnel have been discharged including linguists and others whose skills are critical to military operations.

In ASK NOT, current and veteran gay soldiers reveal how the policy has affected them during their tours of duty as they struggle to maintain a double life, uncertain of whom they can trust.

The film also explores how gay veterans and youth organizers are turning to activism to challenge DADT.

Narrated by Forest Whitaker, CRIPS AND BLOODS: Made in America combines in-depth interviews with current and former gang members, educators, historians, family members and experts with historical and present-day footage to graphically portray the rivalry between African American gangs in South Los Angeles.

About I.O.U.S.A:
Wake up, America! We're on the brink of a financial meltdown. I.O.U.S.A. boldly examines the rapidly growing national debt and its consequences for the United States and its citizens. Burdened with an ever-expanding government and military, increased international competition, overextended entitlement programs, and debts to foreign countries that are becoming impossible to honor, America must mend its spendthrift ways or face an economic disaster of epic proportions.

Throughout history, the American government has found it nearly impossible to spend only what has been raised through taxes. Wielding candid interviews with both average American taxpayers and government officials, Sundance veteran Patrick Creadon (Wordplay) helps demystify the nation's financial practices and policies. The film follows former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker as he crisscrosses the country explaining America's unsustainable fiscal policies to its citizens.

Where: Queens University
            Sykes Auditorium
            1900 Sewlyn Avenue.

Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird is a worldwide classic. British librarians have ranked the novel one "every adult should read before they die," (ahead of the Bible) and its themes have been discussed in classrooms and coffeeshops in almost every country. But did you know that Scout's tale is loosely based on a true story from Lee's childhood in 1936?

Sixty-three years later, residents of Tulia, Texas experienced their own version of the TKAM story. Forty-six people were arrested in a drug sting, 40 of them African-American - close to 15% of the town's black population.

With little to no evidence, many plead guilty to avoid the long sentences received by their peers convicted solely on the testimony of the undercover cop that charged them. All praised the town's officials for winning the war on drugs -  until a white rural farmer began to question the case. (View the trailer for Tulia, TX here. )

Ten years later, its 2009. Could this happen again? Could this happen in our own community? Is justice truly blind?

Join Generation Engage, Queens University of Charlotte, and The Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County as we watch "Tulia, Texas" together and wrap up The Big Read in a thought provoking and action-oriented style.

This event is free and open to the public, though RSVPs are encouraged. Click here to let us know if you plan to attend.

Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia Madeline Albright fled with her parents to the United States when Communists assumed power in 1948. She was appointed Ambassador to the UN by Bill Clinton and was the first woman to serve as the US Secretary of State, becoming the highest ranking woman in the history of the US government.

At the end of her career as Secretary of State, Albright stated that the United States would continue to press Iraq to destroy all its weapons of mass destruction as a condition of lifting economic sanctions. She is currently serving as a top advisor for President-Elect Barack Obama in a working group on national security.

Interesting Fact: Albright's father, Josef Korbel, was the founding dean of the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver and while there taught and mentored future Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Rice credits Korbel for convincing her to switch from being a music major to majoring in international studies.
