Generation Engage Aims to Link Young People, Politics

When it comes to young people and politics, it's not always a lack of interest, it's often a lack of access.

So one nonpartisan group is working to create a middle ground for leaders and youth.

Generation Engage will host the Richmond Workforce Forum this Friday at the Hyperlink Café from 7 to 9 p.m. as a way of bringing young people closer to the leaders who affect their lives.

"We believe in what we're doing," said Latisha Trotter, the group's program coordinator. "We target young people age 18 to 29 and we want them to be a part of what's going on in their community."

Alexis Herman, who was appointed the country's first black labor secretary by President Bill Clinton, will be the guest speaker. She will touch on topics including professional training, competitiveness and the future of the work force.

"Because of her position as secretary of labor, she's at the forefront of what's going on with what we're doing," Trotter said.
